2004 Boston Globe Article

Here’s an interesting article published in the Boston Globe back in 2004 about ice fishing in Maine. Despite its age, the article holds up today and is worth a read. It highlights a legislative battle between ice fisherman, landowners and various special interest groups that, at the time, threatened ice fishing in Maine.

2010 JackTraps.com “Hooked on Fishing” Kids’ Derby

CLICK HERE FOR THE PERMISSION SLIP

This Winter, Jack Traps, in association with the Sebago DerbyFest, will be hosting a youth ice fishing derby on Cochnewagon Lake in Monmouth Center, based at the Monmouth Beach. The date of the derby is Friday, February 19, from 8AM to 2PM, during school vacation.

This derby is open to all children twelve and under. Children familiar with ice fishing and those who are not, but are interested, are equally encouraged to participate.

We are working with the Town of Monmouth and a variety of local sponsors to make this a safe, fun, and well-organized event. As detailed on this permission slip, parents will be responsible for their child over the course of the day. We will have volunteers on hand to set up traps, bait hooks, and teach the children about the sport. Any parents interested in being volunteers at the derby are encouraged to contact us.

There will also be food, portable facilities and plenty of parking. There are no registration costs for participants, but all participants must pre-register by Friday, February 5. There will be a prize for each participant.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment, ready to fish. There will be traps and bait on the ice for kids to fish with if they do not have their own. All participants must arrive dressed in very warm clothing, including boots, hats, and mittens.

Please contact Tim or Tyler Jackson at Jack Traps if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to hearing from you!

New Load of Bait

We just got in a thousand large and jumbo shiners at the bait shop, just right for those toothy pike. Smelts will be in another week or so; we’re waiting for a good strain.

Jack Traps also has a new line of crappie baits and poles in, along with our regular stock of jig sticks. We also have the stiff rod/reel combos for jigging touge and cusk, in three different sizes.
